A medical card, explained plainly

If you use cannabis for pain, sleep, anxiety, appetite, or you buy for a parent who does, a medical recommendation is usually worth it. Here's the honest math.

What it gets you

Lower taxMedical patients with a state MMIC card skip the sales tax (about 9.5% in LA). The excise tax still applies.
Higher limitsAdults can buy 28.5 g of flower a day; patients up to 8 oz.
Stronger productsSome edibles and tinctures are sold at medical-only strengths.
18+, not 21+A patient 18 or older can enter a licensed shop with a recommendation.

How it works (same day, online)

You talk to a California-licensed doctor by video for about 10 minutes, usually $40–60. If you qualify, the recommendation arrives by email the same day and works at every licensed shop in the state. The optional state MMIC card (for the tax break) is a separate county application.

Since April 2026

The federal government moved state-licensed medical cannabis to Schedule III. Adult-use is still Schedule I. If you've been waiting for a reason to go medical, that was it.
